Sustainable Blue Economy & Business Opportunity

I attended a conference featuring Prof. Douglas McCauley from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and UC Berkeley, where he spoke on the sustainable blue economy and business opportunities. Following the lecture, I joined a seminar-style discussion with environmental experts from Tsinghua University, exploring topics such as the evolution of the Earth, the impact of human activity on marine pollution, and future environmental trends.

Experiment Experience in School of Environment

In this microplastic detection experiment, our team used stacked stainless steel sieves, a microscope, and a vacuum filtration apparatus to effectively separate, extract, and detect microplastics from water samples. The process involved filtering the water sample through 10 μm and 20 μm sieves, followed by digestion with 30% hydrogen peroxide for over 72 hours. After separation and filtration with saturated NaCl solution and an alumina membrane filter (0.2 μm), microplastics were successfully detected under a microscope. This experiment confirmed the presence of microplastics in water and established an effective sample pretreatment and detection method.
